Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
